Cosmetic Procedures in Numbers

The number of cosmetic procedures in the US has increased by 87% in the last 10 yrs. Minimally invasive procedures like Fotorejuvenation, Botox, Dermal Fillers, increased by 123%, while their surgical counterparts decreased by 17%. The procedures demonstrating the greatest percentage increases, as reported by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, were soft tissue augmentation, fillers (405% increase), botulinum toxin injections (324% increase), and laser light skin rejuvenation therapy (330% increase).

In 2011, botulinum toxin treatments represented 41% of all the cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. These included treatments with Botox Cosmetic (Allergan), Dysport (Valeant Pharmaceuticals) and Xeomin (Merz Pharmaceuticals). Men represented only 6% of patients. This number has increased since 2010 and reached a 268% increase since 2000.

Treatment of glabellar lines in men differs from the same treatment in women. This is because a man’s skull is different than a woman’s. Men have a larger muscle mass with a different vascularization pattern, accounting for the difference, severity and location of rhytides. A careful examination and evaluation of the severity of facial expressions should precede injections with any of the botulinum toxins – Botox Cosmetic, Dysport or Xeomin.

There are few studies available evaluating the efficacy of Botox injections in men. The ones reported do specify that a higher dose is necessary to control glabellar lines in men compared to women. It is recommended to increase your dose by at least 20 IU to achieve a similar effect.

Please do not get discouraged the results are great, both men and women can enjoy equally the rejuvenation process even though a bit more costly for men than women.
